Allianz Arena: shining brightly for the Final
· Allianz Arena to be officially handed over May 12 ahead of the Final, May 19
· The Arena lighting - normally red, blue or white - will be chequered green and blue for the first time
The iconic Arena in Munich - world famous for its unique red, blue or white solid exterior lighting during matches to represent the team playing - will make history next week. It will light up for the very first time in white with a green and blue chequered “belly band” around the middle, to celebrate the Final taking place Saturday May 19.
The match will be the biggest football game to be hosted at the Allianz Arena since the FIFA World Cup semi-finals back in 2006. Following the same “clean stadium” rules the Arena will be officially handed over to UEFA on May 12, one week before the highly anticipated match between FC Bayern Munich and Chelsea FC.
The Allianz Arena is known for the distinctive illuminated ‘cushions’ on its exterior facade, which change colour depending on which home team is playing - red for FC Bayern Munich and blue for TSV Munich 1860 - staying white for international matches. The Allianz Arena has 1,056 illuminated panels, with red, blue and clear lenses. To create blue or green, the lenses will be covered by coloured foil-plastic sheets. The stadium has never before been lit this way, and the combination will be a unique sight for fans.
“The Arena is recognised the world over for its unique ability to glow red, blue or white and for its fantastic atmosphere. The green and blue colouring is a historic first and a striking way to celebrate the Final. We are very much looking forward to the match and wish all fans from London, Munich and the world an unforgettable experience,” says Joe Gross, Head of Market Management, Allianz SE. Allianz, one of the world’s leading financial services and insurance providers, has its global head office in Munich.
Allianz performed a key role in the original development of the façade and lighting system. Its research laboratory, the Allianz Center for Technology (AZT), conducted all fire resistance tests. The Allianz Arena took three years to build, and since opening on May 31, 2005, has hosted 15million fans and over 300 matches, including the opening match and semi-finals of the 2006 FIFA World Cup. 66,000 attend each major match.
Key facts about the Allianz Arena lighting system include -
· The façade and roof covers 66,500 m² in total, comprising 2,760 inflated panels
· It has 1,056 (of 2,760) illuminated panels, normally red, blue or white - plus green!
